Electric vs. Gas Clothes Dryers

Many brands and types are available when choosing a new clothes dryer for your home, but there are two main power options — electric and gas — that affect various features of the dryer. By assessing your budget and laundry needs, you can choose which power option is best for you. Following are some important details about both.

Electric Dryers

These dryers come in a wide array of models and feature a lower upfront cost than most gas dryers. Most homes already have appropriate wiring for electric dryers, which are relatively easy to install and therefore a popular choice among homeowners. Additionally, electric dryers are often low-maintenance and entail budget-friendly repair costs.

Gas Dryers

These dryers are sometimes more expensive to purchase but can be a more cost-effective option over time. With gas dryers, loads dry much faster than with electric dryers. As a result, less energy is used and your monthly utility bill is lowered. Additionally, gas dryers produce less static cling and keep clothes from wrinkling as much as electric dryers. Not all homes are equipped with the correct hookup for gas dryers, so professional installation may be required.
